Freeform describes a manufacturing and design approach

Digital surfacing can create complex lens surfaces from a selected design file. It does not by itself mean that every lens is fully personalized.

Customization depends on supplied data

The result can only use parameters supported by the chosen design program and supplied accurately with the order. Missing or incorrect frame and fitting data cannot be corrected by the surfacing process alone.

Performance is verified against the prescription order

Finished lenses should be checked for power, geometry, markings, appearance and mounting requirements using the agreed specification and applicable standards.

  1. Create the job reference: enter the customer reference, wearer or patient reference, urgency and any production message so the order remains traceable.
  2. Choose the finishing route: confirm fast uncut, uncut with precalculation, customer-supplied frame, remote edging or frame-and-lens package, plus the frame or mounting type.
  3. Enter frame geometry: upload a trace when available or supply the selected shape with HBOX/A, VBOX/B, DBL and other required geometry. Confirm drill, groove or shape-adjustment data when applicable.
  4. Enter the right and left RX: select the named freeform design and record SPH, CYL, AXIS, ADD, monocular far PD, fitting height/SEG and prescribed prism magnitude and base direction for each eye.
  5. Confirm the lens system: select material and refractive index, diameter, clear/photochromic/polarized option, coating, tint and any supported advanced parameters.
  6. Run technical review or precalculation: check blank diameter, base curve, minimum center/edge thickness, frame coverage, centration and production limits before release.
  7. Review and submit: verify the checkout summary against the original order, approve the job, then use the order-status record for tracking, queries, reorders or controlled remakes.
What is a freeform lens?

A freeform lens is produced with digitally controlled surfacing that can create complex optical surfaces from a selected design file and verified order data.

Is every freeform lens fully personalized?

No. The degree of personalization depends on the selected design program, the parameters it supports and the accurate fitting and frame data supplied with the order.

What are the blue markings on the lens?

They are removable external layout markings used to show fitting references, alignment points, eye side and design scale. They are different from permanent engraved identification marks.

Does freeform surfacing eliminate all peripheral blur?

No. A selected design can manage optical trade-offs and distribution of unwanted aberration, but it cannot eliminate every aberration for every prescription, frame and viewing direction.

Which freeform lens types are available?

Supported programs can include single vision, progressive, sunglass, photochromic, polarized and CR39 or selected high-index options after technical review.

Can freeform lenses receive coatings?

Yes, where compatible. Hard coat, anti-reflective, hydrophobic and selected functional treatments must be matched to the substrate and complete product program.

Will adaptation always be immediate?

No. Adaptation varies by wearer, prescription, design, previous lenses, frame fit and fitting accuracy. No design should guarantee instant or symptom-free adaptation.

What information is needed for an order?

Digital surface generation

A CNC freeform generator produces the selected complex surface from a controlled design file and verified job data. The finished surface is then polished, cleaned and inspected before further treatment or edging.

Design and personalization inputs

Supported inputs may include monocular PD, fitting height, frame measurements or trace and selected position-of-wear parameters. Availability depends on the design program and must be confirmed before production.

External layout markings

Blue removable external markings can identify fitting references, alignment points, eye side and design scale during laboratory verification and dispensing. Permanent engravings and removable layout marks serve different identification functions.

Optical verification

Freeform manufacturing does not eliminate all aberration or guarantee instant adaptation. Finished lenses are verified against the prescription order, selected design, fitting data and applicable optical and geometrical requirements.
