Outdoor Light Management

Fixed tint gives a consistent transmission level. Photochromic darkness changes with activation conditions. Polarized lenses can reduce daylight reflections from water and wet surfaces.

Dark lenses are not intended for night use, and polarized lenses may affect some screens. Select the option for the actual sport rather than treating one solution as universal.

Real Laboratory Inspection

Finished sports lenses are checked against the submitted prescription and supported design parameters using real laboratory inspection equipment.

External reference marks support fitting and inspection and are removed after verification.

Complete frame trace, base curve and position-of-wear measurements are required for technical review. Lenticular blending can be considered where supported by the prescription and sport-frame program.

Tinted sports lenses

Fixed tints provide a consistent color and transmission level. Copper, gray and other colors should be selected for the actual light conditions and sport; dark tints are not intended for night use.

Photochromic sports lenses

Photochromic performance varies by product, UV exposure and temperature. The dark state is not identical in every environment, and activation behind UV-filtering glazing may be limited.

Polarized sports lenses

Polarized lenses can reduce reflected glare in daylight, especially around water and wet surfaces. They may make some LCD screens appear darker at certain angles and are not intended for night use.

  1. Submit the complete RX: include right and left prescription data and any prescribed addition or prism.
  2. Provide the sports frame data: submit a trace plus base curve, wrap angle, pantoscopic tilt and vertex distance.
  3. Define the task: identify the sport, light conditions, glare surfaces and display requirements.

What is a high-base-curve sports lens?

It is a prescription lens designed for a more curved or wrap-style sports frame. The order should include frame and wearing-position data so the laboratory can assess the required Freeform compensation.

Why are sports lenses often made on higher base curves?

Higher curves can better match wrap-style sports frames and field coverage. The suitable curve still depends on the frame, prescription, material and available blank.

Should I choose tinted, photochromic or polarized?

Choose by the real sport and environment. Fixed tints give consistent darkness, photochromic products respond to activation conditions, and polarized lenses can reduce reflected daylight glare.

How dark can a photochromic sports lens become?

The activated darkness depends on the exact product, UV exposure and temperature. The deep-gray image on this page illustrates an approximately 85% activated state and is not a universal guarantee.

Can sports lenses be used as protective eyewear?

Not automatically. A lens blank alone does not make protective eyewear. The material, frame, lens retention, assembly and finished product must comply with the applicable standard for the intended use.

Are all prescriptions available in high curves?

No. Availability depends on the prescription, design, base curve, blank diameter, material, thickness, frame trace and finishing requirements. Submit the complete order for feasibility review.

Freeform Compensation for Wrap-Style Frames

High-wrap frames can change the effective optical performance once the lens is positioned in front of the wearer. A supported Freeform lens design can use the confirmed position-of-wear data to calculate the prescription for the selected frame and wearing geometry.

Light-Management Choices

Depending on the sport and lighting conditions, a program may include tinted lenses, photochromic lenses or polarized lenses. The selected color, transmission, activation behavior, display compatibility and intended use should be confirmed before production.

Materials and Protective-Use Limits

CR-39, polycarbonate, Trivex or high-index material may be reviewed according to prescription, frame and use. Where protective eyewear is required, the finished frame, lens, assembly and applicable standard must be assessed together; material choice alone does not establish compliance.
